Hattie’s Choice

This is my newest Accuquilt die, I picked it up at the Kansas City Quilt Festival last month.  I was looking for something interesting, but not overly complicated.   I like that you can do a variety of things with the design, depending on how you place fabric colors, but each block only has 4 segments with 4 pieces.

My first project with it will be a scrappy experiment.  I have a pile of odds and ends, narrow strips and strange shapes that I was going to chop up into squares, but hadn’t gotten to yet.

Many of them are large enough to get the shapes I need, and if that isn’t enough I have this pile of remnants from a sale a couple years ago. Lots of good colors.

Hattie’s Choice is super easy to put together, a diamond, two triangles and a cone shape.  With the die cut pieces it almost sews itself because everything matches perfectly every time.

The only thing I don’t like is the placement of the shapes on the die.  You MUST cut strips from your yardage to get the diamonds in the center.  Otherwise your fabric overlays the other shapes.  It’s possible to arrange random scraps on the cone at the end and have the extra hang off,  same with the triangles.  So I don’t think the placement is all that efficient.  Still, it’s better than cutting them by hand.

Here you can see I am doing a sample layout to see if the shapes can be cut from these scraps.

So far I am really pleased with how the first few blocks have come out.
